Actress Maame Dokono Shares Bitter Political Experience

Maame Dokono alleged that the former First Lady, who was sponsoring her educative kids show 'By the Fireside', stopped sponsoring the show after she switched allegiance to the NPP, which brought the show to an abrupt end.

Legendary actress, Grace Omaboe, better known as Maame Dokono, has opened up about her negative experiences during her involvement in politics.

Narrating the details of her political journey at a recent press launch to celebrate 60 decades in the film industry, the actress vowed to stay out of anything related to politics.

“If you are in politics and your government doesn’t win it becomes a problem… I will say I joined the two parties and I really suffered…so because of what I am doing.. I decided not to do it again,” she said.

It can be recalled that Maame Dokono began her political career by joining the National Democratic Congress(NDC)  during the tenure of the late Jerry John Rawlings, through her acquaintance with the former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang.

However, things took an interesting turn when the actress switched to join the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo became the flagbearer in 2008. 

She alleged that the former First Lady, who was sponsoring her educative kids show ‘By the Fireside’, stopped sponsoring the show after she switched allegiance to the NPP, which brought the show to an abrupt end.

“Because of the switch in political parties, she took everything from me. You know she was the one sponsoring ‘By the Fireside,’ she gave me a van and camera. But as soon as the change came she took everything,” she said.

Addressing rumors about a romantic relationship with the late NDC founder Jerry John Rawlings, Maame Dokono stated that the rumors were untrue.

“Some said they heard that I was the girlfriend of President Rawlings. I was never the girlfriend of President Rawlings,” She said.

She also noted that she suffered character assassination, betrayal, and insults from numerous people in the industry after the NPP lost the 2008 elections.
