“Certain Winds from the South” directed by Eric Gyamfi and written with Moshood Hamza Balogun has earned the prestigious honor to screen at the Berlin Film Festival.
The film was shot in 2021 as an adaptation of Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo’s “Certain Winds from the South” from her “No Sweetness Here” collection of short stories of the year 1970.
The collection takes into perspective the post-independence Ghanaian society.
The story is about M´ma Asana, who receives a visit from her son-in-law one fateful evening. He has come to inform her of his decision to embark on a journey to the South of Ghana, in search of greener pastures.

Through conversations and reflections from both characters, and others, we uncover a vicious cycle of inequality, that seeks to threaten their already precarious future.
The film is directed by Eric Gyamfi and written with Moshood Hamza Balogun, with rapper Pure Akan, who doubles as narrator and screen character. It also features Nasiba Mbabe Bawa, Nenesenor Abloso, Asiakwen Agbadem, DJ Yamz, Dennis Nipah among others.
The film has Dagbani, Twi, Arabic, and English spoken throughout, rendering a holistic cultural representation.

Released in 2023, the film will show at the Berlinale between the hours of 16:00, 19:00 and 21:00 on February 18th, 20th and 23rd.
