Kwabena Donkor Challenges Akufo-Addo’s ‘Uninterrupted’ Electricity Supply Claims

Dr Donkor stated further that the inability to sustain power exports clearly indicates the ongoing struggles within Ghana's energy sector, a reality that many Ghanaians can attest to.

Former Power Minister,  Dr. Kwabena Donkor, has openly contested the claims made by President Nana Akufo-Addo regarding the stability of the nation’s energy sector.

This follows President Akufo-Addo’s statements during the State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2024, where he boasted of a continuous and uninterrupted electricity supply throughout the past seven years.

“…my government was determined that DUMSOR would not be inflicted upon Ghana and Ghanaians under an NPP government, and I am glad to be able to say, SO FAR, SO GOOD, we have managed to keep the lights on these last seven (7) years, even in the midst of a financial crisis,” Akufo-Addo said.

“The government can claim that there has not been load shedding, which is not accurate,” Dr. Donkor stated pointing out the discrepancy between the official claims of uninterrupted power supply and the actual situation on the ground.

Dr Donkor stated further that the inability to sustain power exports clearly indicates the ongoing struggles within Ghana’s energy sector, a reality that many Ghanaians can attest to. He mentioned that contrary to government assertions, there had been load shedding, with 600 megawatts being cut off at peak times just two days before his statement.

This situation has persisted over the past month, reducing Ghana’s power exports to neighboring countries such as Togo, Benin, and Ivory Coast due to inadequate generation capacity.
