Ghana and the Bahamas Go Visa-Free

Ghana and the island nation of the Bahamas have signed a visa-waiver agreement to allow all passport holders of the two countries travel visa-free.

The discussions for bilateral visa waiver between the countries began in May 2023, when the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong visited the Bahamas with other government heads to discuss issues of interconnectivity and economic investment.

Last December, the agreed terms of that dialogue were honoured when the Ambassador of the Bahamas visited Ghana to discuss more on deepening cooperation and trade.

In a circular on Tuesday, February 20, the Ghana Immigration Service urged aviation authorities and airline companies to take note of the signed agreement and “forestall challenges and inconveniences faced by uninformed travelers between Ghana and the Bahamas.”

The visa agreement comes as no surprise, as Ghana recently signed bilateral visa-free travel arrangements with other countries such as South Africa, as part of an agenda to embrace the free movement of people, goods, and services. In December for instance, as part of its Year of Return initiative, authorities granted visa-on-arrival to all persons who entered the country.

With the deal with the Bahamas now sealed, the island nation would be the ninth Caribbean country to have a visa-free arrangement with Ghana.
