John Kumah’s seat: Electoral Commission Sets April 30 for Ejisu By-Election

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced plans to hold by-elections for the Ejisu constituency seat, which has been left vacant following the death of deputy Finance Minister and MP for Ejisu, John Ampontuah Kumah.

The late MP’s party, the NPP, has already announced primaries set for Saturday, April 13, where nine aspirants will contest for the seat.

Meanwhile, no political party has yet to announce aspirants for the seat. Earlier last week, the opposition NDC said it was still considering whether to contest the seat. But given that the Ejisu constituency is an NPP stronghold – having been won by the party since 1996 – it’s not certain yet whether other parties may put forward candidates for the by-election.

However, there’s speculation that Kwabena Owusu-Aduomi may contest the by-election as an independent candidate. Mr. Owusu-Aduomi who is a former MP for the area ran on the NPP ticket in 2009. But lately, he seems to be a close ally of Alan Kyeremanten, a former NPP stalwart who resigned last year to form his political movement.
