You’re Not Independent Enough to Make Reckless Decisions – Ato Forson Warns EC

Dr Ato Forson also urged Parliament to exercise its oversight responsibility to ensure the Electoral Commission's actions do not compromise Ghana's peace and stability.

The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has expressed disapproval of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) recent actions, including the barring and subsequent reinstatement of political party agents from the voter transfer process.

Delivering a speech in Parliament on June 11, 2024, while welcoming his colleagues from recess, he said, the EC’s decisions must not harm Ghana’s democracy.

“While we acknowledge that the Electoral Commission is an independent body, it must be pointed out in no uncertain terms to the Electoral Commission that it does not have the independence to make dangerous, ridiculous and outrageous decisions that can affect the peace and stability of our country and this democracy,” he said.

“It is therefore imperative that Parliament calls the Electoral Commission in order to save this democracy and protect the peace and stability of our dear country,” he added.

According to Dr. Forson, the Minority will seek an emergency meeting of the Committee of the Whole to address these pressing concerns with the Electoral Commission before it worsens.

“Mr Speaker, the NDC Minority Caucus want to use this forum to demand an urgent committee of the whole to iron out these grave concerns with the Electoral Commission before it is too late,” he said.

He concluded by calling for immediate action to resolve these issues and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
