3,765 Alcohol, 5,554 Drug-Related Mental Health Cases Recorded in 2023

Between 2019 and 2023, there has been a steady upward trend in mental health disorders related to psychoactive substance use, from 4,155 to 5,554 cases.

As the world marks International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today, the Mental Health Authority in Ghana stands in solidarity with the international community to address the pressing issues of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

In a statement dated June 26, 2024, the Authority urged all stakeholders including government, NGOs, educational institutions, media, and the public to join forces in the fight against drug abuse by investing in preventive measures.

According to the Authority, drug abuse is a growing concern in Ghana, especially among the youth, with detrimental effects on public health, safety, and the country’s socio-economic development.

Between 2019 and 2023, there has been a steady upward trend in mental health disorders related to psychoactive substance use, from 4,155 to 5,554 cases, with young adults (20-34) being the most affected and a worrying increase among preteens (10-14).

The Authority added that Data from the District Health Information Management System (DHIMS), indicates that mental health issues stemming from alcohol and substance abuse are a top 10 reason for outpatient attendance.

In 2023, alcohol use was linked to 3,765 mental health disorder cases, while other psychoactive substances were associated with 5,554 cases.

The United Nations’ International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a global call to action to combat drug abuse and illegal drug trafficking, with the Mental Health Authority urging a collaborative effort to tackle these pressing issues.
