A/R: Suspected gold thief beaten to death, another hospitalized

Police in the Ashanti Region have launched an investigation into the death of a suspected thief Ernest Kwabena Poku who was battered by a mob at Manso Atwere in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.

The claimed accomplice of the murder was also attacked by the mob and taken to the hospital.

The police accounts that the incident occurred on Tuesday, August 10, 2021

The two were alleged to have stolen gold at the Napoleon Mining Site in the area.

Ernest Kwabena Poku’s remains has been deposited to the St. Martin’s Hospital in Agroyesum for reservation and autopsy.

Speaking to the media, the public relations officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Godwin Ahianyo, said one of the assailants, Kwame Dapaah, has been arrested while one other person is on the run.

He is currently in custody and assisting with investigations.

The owner of the mining concession was also invited by the police to assist with investigations “and is cooperating in that regard,” according to ASP Godwin Ahianyo.

One other person, identified only as Culture, is also on the run.

Police have since urged all members to own up, “since the police will not condone any such distasteful act in the region.”
