More than 7 hours after it should have landed, an aircraft carrying Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine others has gone missing, according to an official government statement.
The Malawi Defense Force Aircraft is said to have left the country’s capital, Lilongwe, on Monday morning at 9:17 local time and failed to make its scheduled landing for 10:00 at the Mzuzu International Airport, in the country’s north.
Authorities there say they have been unable to make contact with the plane since it went off the radar.
After being informed of the incident, Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera ordered a rescue operation and cancelled his scheduled flight to the Bahamas.
