Alban Bagbin Elected Speaker of Ghana’s 8th Parliament After Night-long Drama

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Nadowli Kaleo Constituency and Second Deputy Speaker of the 7th Parliament of Ghana, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been elected Speaker for Ghana’s 8th Parliament after a night long drama among Parliamentarians.

It was a night-long of serious confusion including snatching of ballot boxes and ballot papers to misunderstanding on seating arrangements.

An election process, which started at about 12:14 am on January 7, ran through to about 8:00am in the morning.

As a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Mr. Bagbin’s win not expected by many political pundits as a house divided equally with one independent candidate sitting with the New Patriotic Party was expected to vote in favour of the ruling party.
