Botswana Becomes Latest African Country to Grant Starlink an Operating Licence

Botswana which had before banned the use of Starlink made the turnaround after the country's President had a meeting with the SpaceX team during a US-Africa business forum in Dallas, Texas

Botswana’s government has granted an operating licence to Starlink, the satellite internet service owned by SpaceX, weeks after a government delegation met with the SpaceX team in the US.

“After the meeting [with SpaceX], I immediately decided to agree to the licensing of Starlink in the country,” President  Mokgweetsi Masisi said, adding that he had given the country’s communications regulator two weeks to fast-track Starlink’s license application.

The turnaround to grant Starlink a licence comes after authorities in the southern African country in February rejected Starlink’s operating license application citing missing information. The importation, sale, and use of Starlink was banned shortly after.

By licensing Starink, Botswanan joins Zimbabwe and Ghana which recently granted approval to have the satellite service operate after making it illegal before.
