Central Region: Man Arrested for Attempting to Sell Niece to Acquire Canadian Visa

The suspect told police officers during interrogation that the child is his elder brother's daughter

The Central East Regional Police Intelligence Unit (PID) has arrested a 30-year-old man identified as Nana Kofi Amofa, for attempting to sell his six-year-old niece for GHC150,000 to finance a visa application to Canada.

The arrest took place on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, around 10:00 PM at Gomoa Buduburam.  According to reports the police received a tip-off about the suspect’s plan to sell the young girl for financial gain towards his travel aspirations.

Acting swiftly on the information, officers from the Police Intelligence Unit deployed an undercover operation, posing as potential buyers interested in buying the child. During negotiations, the suspect insisted on GHC150,000 for the transaction.

Upon interrogation, Nana Kofi Amofa acknowledged that the girl is his elder brother’s daughter. He also admitted to luring the girl from her parent’s home with promises of better educational opportunities.

Both the suspect and the young girl have been transferred to the Kasoa Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) for further investigation into the matter.
