The Spanish football giants, Real Madrid, have been crowned as the Kings of European football after defeating Borussia Dortmund in the finals on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the Wembley Stadium in England.
After defeating Dortmund 2-0, Real Madrid who have not lost a Champions League final in 39 years made history by taking home their fifteenth UEFA Champions League trophy.
The match started with the Dortmund side dominating the game with crucial defensive plays that left the Madrid players frustrated during the first half of the game. Matt Hummels of Dortmund was instrumental in stopping the Madrid attackers from advancing towards the goal.
Dortmund went on to create numerous goal scoring chances in the last half of the game but failed to convert them into goals. Niclas Fuellkrug of Dortmund missed an opportunity to score when he struck the ball against Madrid’s post from a distance. Karim Adeyemi and Julian Brandt also had opportunities to score but failed to utilise the opportunities.

For Real Madrid, the second half proved to be a turning point in the match as manager Carlo Ancelotti altered his team’s strategy, giving them the advantage and the ability to win. Following a corner kick by Toni Kroos that Dani Carvajal headed into the Dortmund goal, Madrid took the lead in the 74th minute of action.
After a few missed chances from Vinicius Jr, who was mostly out-pacing the Dortmund defenders with his fast-paced dribbles, Real Madrid added another goal to seal their victory. The goal came after Jude Bellingham intercepted a pass from Dortmund’s Ian Maatsen, and laid a pass to Vinicius Jr. The Brazilian speedster who was on the run with the ball quickly slid home Madrid’s second goal in the 83rd minute to silence the loud Dortmund fans.
The match ended with Los Blancos (Real Madrid) emerging as the Kings of European football for the fifteenth time, crushing Dortmund’s initial dreams of sailing to Germany with the Champions League trophy.
It is interesting to note that Real Madrid have played in 16 Champions League finals and have only lost in 3. The team last lost in 1981.
