CPP Sets August 24 for Presidential Primaries

The party delayed the selection of its flagbearer over internal conflict

The Conventions Peoples Party (CPP) has announced the timeline for its upcoming internal elections.

Chairman of the party’s Congress Committee, Nana Mireku Tumi said at a press conference on Tuesday that nominations for the National Flagbearership election will be accepted from July 24, 2024, to August 20, 2024.

Additionally, the vetting of flagbearer candidates is scheduled for August 6-7, 2024. Campaigning will officially start on August 9, 2024, and will conclude on August 23, 2024. The elections themselves are set to take place on August 24, 2024.

The CPP, the party founded by Ghana’s first president Dr. Kwame Nkrumah seemed to be in disarray lately. Last month, an official said the party may not contest the election as it’s been unable to resolve internal feuds, making it impossible to select a candidate for the election.

But at Tuesday’s presser, party officials say those issues have been cleared and they are poised for a possible victory at the December polls.

“We are ready to make this congress a success and set our party on the path to victory,” said Mireku Tumi, although the selection or announcement of the party’s flagbearer comes about just four months before the general elections.

So far, only one party member, Nana Akosua Sarpong Kumankuma has indicated an intention to contest the flagbearer race. It’s also not immediately clear if Ivor Greenstreet, the party’s two-time flagbearer may contest this time.
