Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has said his efforts at digitising most of the country’s state institutions have saved Ghana more than GH¢356 million.
Speaking at the launch of LEADing Justice, a strategic framework document of the Chief Justice on her vision for the Judiciary in Accra, Dr Bawumia highlighted that his digitisation initiatives have saved the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and the National Service Secretariat GH¢480 million and GH¢356 million respectively, through the elimination of ghost names.
“When we digitalized and gave everyone a Ghana Card and made the decision to make the Ghana Card Tax Identification number, we increased the proportion of individuals with Tax ID, the number moved from 4% to 85% just like that.
“We have also seen through digitalization that you can deal with corruption. We have eliminated ghost workers at the Controller and Accountant General Office just by using the Ghana Cards because the ghost doesn’t have fingerprints,” he told members at the forum.

The judiciary since 2018, has been championing reforms around digititalisation through the implementation of the Electronic Case Tracking System and an E-justice system.
Although the E-justice programme is yet to be fully operational at all courts in the country, it is expected that it will ultimately reduce inefficiencies with court processes, as the courts will run paperless.
