The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa says the Commission has secured unanimous support from all political parties, enabling them to proceed with the necessary legislative processes, to make the Ghana Card the sole ID for voter registration.
The move had previously been rejected by some political parties, particularly the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who cited disenfranchisement concerns as some Ghanaians still lacked the Ghana Card.
But at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting in Accra on Wednesday, May 29, Jean Mensa said with the parties’ buy-in now, a bill would be laid before Parliament at its next session.
“At the Inter-party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, the issue of Ghana Card was discussed extensively and I think the advice was that going forward the EC look at laying the bill that seeks to ensure that the Ghana Card is the sole document for the identification of a citizen,” Jean Mensa is quoted b state publication Graphic Online to have said.
