NDC flagbearer, John Mahama says, selecting Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running-mate will eventually break the glass ceiling for Ghanaian women in politics.
Speaking at an event on Wednesday, to mark the official unveiling of his number two, Mahama said, Naana Opoku-Agyemang will inspire women to take positions of power.
“Naana Jane represents the aspirations and dreams of every Ghanaian, especially our female population. As my second in command, she will break the glass ceiling that has held our women down and she will generate new hope in our daughters that they also aspire to occupy the highest offices of the land,” he said.
He added that her credibility and global appeal put her in a position to achieve that.

“As my running-mate and potential Vice President going into the 2024 elections, I do not doubt this as her globally acclaimed credentials to that. Naana Jane is a woman of unquestionable integrity,” Mahama said further.
The choice of Naana Opoku Agyemang ultimately signals that the NDC has taken a strategic move toward gender equity. Affirmative action is yet to be realised in Ghana, as just 13.8% of women are represented in Parliament and further low at local level governance.
