The Netherlands have booked their place in the Euro 2024 semi-finals with a 2-1 comeback win over Turkey in Berlin.
Turkey’s player, Merih Demiral, couldn’t play because he was suspended by UEFA for making a controversial hand gesture after scoring a goal in their previous game against Austria.
This gesture is associated with a group that promotes extreme nationalism in Turkey.
Turkey took the lead when Samet Akaydin scored the first goal with a header from Arda Guler’s pass in the 35th minute.

But the Netherlands improved a lot in the second half, scoring two goals in a short time. This allowed them to move on to the next round, while Turkey’s players struggled with fatigue.
Stefan de Vrij scored with a header from Memphis Depay’s cross in the 70th minute, making the score equal. Then, Mert Muldur accidentally scored a goal for the Netherlands because Cody Gakpo was pressuring him, following a long pass from Denzel Dumfries.
The Dutch will play England in the semi-finals in Dortmund on July 10, 2024.
