Forestry Commission Says Over 13.5m Seedlings Distributed For Green Ghana Day

The Green Ghana Day project started in 2021, has been used as a campaign to push awareness on the need to restore degraded forest landscapes and fight climate change

The Forestry Commission says more than 13 million tree seedlings were distributed during the June 7 celebrations of the Green Ghana Day.

The Green Ghana Day project started in 2021, has been used as a campaign to push awareness on the need to restore degraded forest landscapes and fight climate change.

At a press conference on Thursday, the Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, John Allotey said the Commission is ready to provide support to individuals who picked up and planted seedlings to enable them to properly nurture the seedlings.

Even though the seedlings distributed by the Commission surpass the target of 10 million for this year, Allotey noted that three regions (the Greater Accra, Upper East, and North East Regions) failed to meet their target.

“North East and Upper East Regions distributed few seedlings to individuals and observed ceremonial planting because they did not experience enough rainfalls prior to GGD, so they were told to hold on for the rains before they plough and plant. The seedlings are at the Forest Services Division (FSD) nurseries, awaiting favorable weather conditions for distribution and planting, he said However, Greater Accra Region could not distribute their target because people were more interested in fruits, and ornamental seedlings and not interested in timber tree seedlings.”
Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Jinapor earlier this month said the seedlings planted since 2021 on average had a 70% rate of survival, although he did not reveal how he came by the statistics.
