The Ghana Kidney Association has applauded the government’s move to offer free dialysis sessions to kidney patients through the National Health Insurance Scheme, and urges the government to make this support a permanent initiative.
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) recently announced that patients under 18 and over 60 years old will receive all eight dialysis sessions per month for free, effective June 1 to December 2024 while Patients between 19 and 59 years old will receive two free dialysis sessions per month.

On Tuesday, June 4, 2024 the Ghana Kidney Association issued a statement thanking the government for its support and advocating for the inclusion of all patient categories, with the goal of making this support integral part of the NHIS.

The Association also appealed to the government to enact the proposed organ transplantlegislation, saying it is the most cost-efficient and effective kidney replacement treatment option.
The association has also raised concerns about the timely reimbursement of services, gigiven the history of delayed payments by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
