GPCC calls on Akufo Addo to assent anti gay bill

Despite widespread commendations to the parliament and bill sponsors for its passage, critiques from entities such as Amnesty International Ghana have voiced substantial opposition.

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has urged President Akufo-Addo to assent to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the Anti-gay Bill, recently passed by parliament.

This legislation, which criminalizes and prohibits LGBT activities, received parliamentary approval on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

Those found guilty could face a jail term ranging from 6 months to 3 years, while those promoting and sponsoring the act could face a jail term between 3 to 5 years

In a statement, the GPCC underscored the imperative of upholding Ghana’s unique cultural and family values, urging the President to grant assent to the bill, thus solidifying its enactment into law.

”The GPCC takes this opportunity to kindly request that the president of the republic gives assent to the bail to bring finality to the advocacy which seeks to uphold our long-standing religious and cultural value system,” the statement said.

Furthermore, the statement acknowledged the contributions and critiques from Members of Parliament and the Attorney General’s office, recognizing their role in enhancing the bill’s content.

The GPCC also expressed appreciation for the steadfast commitment of the Right Honourable Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, in ensuring the bill’s successful passage
