The Vice president and the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has disclosed that he will abolish taxes on electronic transactions, betting, and emissions. This, according to him will help move the country towards a cashless economy.
Presenting his vision to Ghanaians at an event themed “Ghana’s Next Chapter: Bold Solutions for the Future”, at the Kofi Ohene Konadu auditorium at the University of Professional Studies, Dr. Bawumia said abolishing of these taxes would encourage the population to migrate to electronic payment platforms.
“To move towards a cashless economy, we have to encourage the population to use electronic channels of payments. To accomplish this, under my administration, there will be no taxes on electronic payments. The e-levy will therefore be abolished,” he said to a cheering crowd.
He also revealed that tax on betting and the recent controversial emissions tax, and the proposed 15% VAT on electricity bills if implemented would also be abolished.

Social media reactions indicate that Ghanaians are not convinced by this message as those taxes were introduced when Dr. Bawumia was Vice President.
” So Bawumia if u can cancel all these taxes when voted into power why can’t you convince your boss Nana Addo to cancel them as well for ur chances to be high,” a user on X (formerly Twitter) posted.
