‘It’s Disrespectful to Lobby for Bawumia’s Running Mate’- Ursula Owusu-Ekuful

The race for the NPP running mate position has heated up, with several names emerging and reports of intense lobbying by senior party members, sparking polls by various organizations.

The Minister for Communication and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has expressed disapproval against the lobbying for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate slot ahead of the December elections.

She believes the lobbying act is disrespectful, as it undermines Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s authority as the flagbearer.

Speaking in an interview in Accra on June 24, 2024, the Communication Minister emphasized the need to allow Dr. Bawumia to select his running mate freely without external interference.

“Let him be given the space to choose the person he thinks can partner with him. I think it is even disrespectful for people to be lobbying as if he can’t make his own decision,” Owusu-Ekuful said.

According to Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, the position of running mate is not something to be taken lightly or treated as a gamble and the active lobbying must discouraged.

“Is that a position you lobby or gamble for? I am absolutely against any active seeking of any such position. It is an appointed position. I think the flagbearer should be left and given the space to decide who he thinks can best partner him,” she said.
