NDC flagbearer John Mahama has cut sod for the construction of a new palace for the Gonja Overlord, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I.
The ceremony happened on Friday, at the Jakpa Palace in Damongo.
“The new palace’s intentional design reflects Sahelian architecture, reminiscent of the Gonja’s origins in the Mande region around Mali. It will be a grand symbol of our history and heritage. This project is a significant step towards the cultural and historical preservation of the Gonja people. I am committed to seeing this project through to completion by October of this year,” Mahama wrote on Facebook.
The former president would finance the entire project, and it’s expected to be completed later in October, although the cost involved is unknown.

Despite Mahama’s new project for the Gonja King, it’s interesting to note that earlier this month, NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia also undertook a rehabilitation project at the same palace, which later earned him a title – the Konokonwule Wura (King of Unity) by the King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom.
