Matthew Opoku Prempeh Resigns as Energy Minister

Opoku-Prempeh submitted his resignation indicating he wants to focus on campaigning with NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Bawumia

Matthew Opoku Prempeh, MP for Manhyia South and running-mate to Dr. Bawumia has resigned from office as Minister of Energy, with effect from July 18, 2024.

A statement signed by Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the Presidency, said Opoku Prempeh submitted his resignation today, July 11, 2024, indicating he wants to focus on working alongside the New Patriotic Party presidential candidate, Dr. Bawumia.

“President Akufo-Addo has expressed his deep gratitude to Hon Dr. Mathwe Opoku-Prempeh for his dedicated service to the government and the people of Ghana. His tenure as Minister for Education and as Minister for Energy has been marked by a stellar record of accomplishments and significant contributions to the education and energy sectors,” the statement said.

As Opoku-Prempeh is leaving the ministry, the President has designated the Lands and Natural Resources Minister Samuel Jinapor to exercise Cabinet oversight responsibility over the Ministry of Energy. Additionally, the Minister of State designated as the Ministry of Energy, Herbert Krapa, will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Ministry.
