Measles Epidemic Hit Burkina Faso, 1,269 Detected so Far

Local health officials say they are working to strengthen disease surveillance measures, and are planning to implement a vaccination campaign in an effort to prevent disease transmission.

The Ministry of Health in Burkina Faso has reported a possible measles epidemic in the country. From January 1 to February 10, 2024, i.e. in the 6th week of this year, about 1,269 suspected cases of measles and four deaths have been recorded.

This is compared to 2023, when about 2,190 suspected cases, including 960 confirmed and 5 deaths, were recorded.

The cases of this highly contagious disease were found in the districts of Boulmiougou and Bogodogo in the Center region, Ouahigouya in the North region, the Tougouri region in the center-north, and the districts of Solenzo and Boromo in the Boucle du Mouhoun.
