The Inter-Party and Civil Society Relations Directorate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) engaged the Fulani community as part of the party’s broader policy engagement framework and inclusive governance.
At a meeting held on July 18, 2024, at the office of Inter-Party and Civil Society Relations, on behalf of the Fulani community, Sheikh Osman Barry, thanked the NDC for setting up the directorate and presented their concerns to the NDC, seeking action from the party if it assumes power.
“We thank the NDC for this initiative but, we’ve been abandoned by political leaders, especially the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, after the 2016 and 2020 elections. Our needs have yet to be met, and our situation has worsened. We face discrimination daily and are often treated as outcasts in the country,” Barry said.
He added that the Fulani community in Ghana has played an important role in supporting the agricultural and economic sectors of Ghana.

Speaking on behalf of the NDC, the Director of the Inter-Party and CSOs Relations Directorate, Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, promised the party’s commitment to their concerns and said the Fulani community has historically been a trusted ally of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party, and its founder Jerry John Rawlings was dedicated to promoting the welfare and development of the Fulani people.
“We are interested in your issues and that’s why this meeting is important to us. The Fulani community has always been our ally. Jerry John Rawlings, the founder of the NDC, was committed to the development and well-being of the Fulani people. We continue to uphold his vision,” Otokunor said.
He added that the 2020 People’s Manifesto had plans to boost beef production by enhancing the production of silage, hay, and fodder banks to support cattle ranching.
“And if you will recall, in our 2020 People’s Manifesto, We captured our commitment to increasing beef cattle production by improving the production of silage, hay, and fodder banks to support ranching of cattle,” he added
The Deputy Director of the Directorate, Dr. Mary Awusi, also stated that the NDC party has consistently engaged with the Fulani community, with whom she has personally met several times. She added that the party is committed to supporting their growth and addressing their difficulties.
“The NDC has always been in touch with the Fulani community. I have personally held several meetings with them, and we are dedicated to their development. We understand their challenges and are working towards addressing them, for which reason we have taken steps towards addressing the issues faced by the Fulani community and ensuring their inclusion in the nation’s development,” Awusi said.
