NDC, NPP in War of Words over Ameri Renaming

The two major political parties in Ghana are embroiled in a war of words over the renaming of the power plant, Ameri.

According to an NDC legal team member, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, the decision to rename the plant which has been relocated to the Ashanti Region to generate 150 megawatts of electricity for the middle belt is borne out of shame.

He stated how President Akufo-Addo and his agents in opposition criticized the then President, John Dramani Mahama, for patronising the plant.

Edudzi Tameklo’s vituperations come after the Volta River Authority (VRA)  announced the commissioning of the plant now named the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant (K1TPP) at Anwomaso, in the Oforikrom Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

Countering NDC’s posture on the Ameri renaming, Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku, Chairman of the  Bawumia (DMB) Energy Manifesto Committee, said, “The ten gas turbines are owned by Ghana and operated by VRA, so why should they be called Ameri? Ameri in Ghana stands for fraud, rent-seeking, and corruption. The NDC can keep that name. I believe they should instead express gratitude to VRA for the rebranding. We are still waiting for innovative ideas on why the NDC wants to come back to power”.

According to him, he was baffled by the latest claim made by the NDC that the government is deceiving Ghanaians by renaming the Ameri plants K1TPP (Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant).

“Today, the NDC is not ashamed to remind Ghanaians of this bad deal. They want President Mahama to be given credit. Yes, we will give credit where it is due, but also credit for a very bad transaction that cost Ghana USD $160 million,” he said.
