The 2024 STEMnovation competition concluded in a thrilling finale with Obuasi Senior High Technical School emerging as the overall winner.
The school triumphed over 55 other finalists with an innovative project on environmental sustainability.
The three-day event, which started on Monday, October 14, showcased the brightest minds working to address critical national challenges on the theme: “Building a Future of Innovation through science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for National Development”.
Innovation
Obuasi Senior High Technical School distinguished itself with innovation, design craft, clarity, creativity, teamwork and professionalism, which earned the admiration of the judges.

The school’s success earned the students a cash prize of ₵50,000, a significant boost to both the school and the team involved.
Progress
The Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Technical, Vocational and REducation Training (TVET), Professor Kingsley Nyarko, emphasised the significance of STEM education in Ghana’s future progress.
He highlighted the need to equip the next generation with both theoretical and practical skills.
“STEM and TVET form the backbone of Ghana’s future workforce. Through this competition, we are building a generation of thinkers, creators and doers who will shape the trajectory of Ghana for years to come,” he said.
Transformation
Prof. Nyarko added that the projects had the potential to transform industries, communities and the nation.
He further praised the competing students for their creativity and efforts.
“It is inspiring to see our youth taking on the global challenge of climate change head-on. These projects have the potential to transform industries, communities and our nation,” he added.
Competition
This year’s competition follows months of intense regional contests, which saw 250 schools from eight zones across Ghana competing.
The event is organised in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), with a focus on four critical areas, namely sustainable energy, environmental sustainability, food sovereignty and digital technology.
The goal is to empower students to develop solutions that contribute to Ghana’s future development.
