Omar Sherrif Captan Advocates for Enhanced Sets in Ghanaian Theatres

Ghanaian actor, Omar Sherrif Captan, is advocating for more productivity in Ghana’s theatre industry, noting the lack of high-quality sets in productions.

While acknowledging a growing interest in theatre, the renowned actor emphasized the importance of authenticity and the need for realistic props and costumes to elevate performances.

In an interview with Joy FM at the press launch of Latif Abubakar’s latest play, “The Licence,” Omar expressed excitement about his role in the adaptation of Luigi Pirandello’s work. This adaptation, which explores themes of bureaucracy and individual defiance against oppressive systems, is the play’s first Afrocentric rendition.

“We still have a long way to go in terms of our sets. We still have to build good sets for our performances. We still have to have good costumes and then bring real props on set. The stage should be available for us to bring real props on set. We bring cars, bikes, horses, animals, so many things on set to make it realistic. We need a lot of realism on set,” he said.

The actor and his team are collaborating with Globe Productions Limited to present the play at the Accra International Conference Centre on May 4th, 5th, and 6th, 2024.

Captan’s advocacy is part of a larger initiative to elevate Ghanaian theatre by incorporating authenticity and innovation into productions, thereby enriching the cultural landscape and engaging audiences on a deeper level.

Omar Sheriff Captan is a veteran Ghanaian actor and film director. In the early 2000s, he gained popularity for his roles as a lover boy and bad boy. Captan starred in several Ghanaian films including “Cheaters”, “Tentacles”, “Tinsel” as well as “Crime of Love.”
