Labour Unions have announced a strike beginning Monday, July 15, in reaction to news that the pensions regulatory authority has granted approval, to allow the sale of 60% shares in four SSNIT hotels to proceed.
The Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Dr Yaw Baah, declared the strike action following an emergency meeting on Friday afternoon. The decision comes after the Employment Minister announced on Thursday that the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) has lifted directives to halt the planned sale.

“We find it extremely difficult to understand how and why any PRA would turn around to approve such a flawed deal two weeks after the directive. Organised Labour would like to reiterate its role and position that the proposal of SNIT shares in the four hotels is not in the best interest of Ghanaian workers,” they said further in a statement, asking workers to not go to work until the deal is terminated.

As SSNIT faces intense pressure to halt the sale of the hotels to Rock City (the company owned by Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong) its Director-General has justified the sale.
Speaking at a press briefing last week, Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo said the hotels are not paying profits, and the planned sale is the only way out.
“If you look at these hotels, they are capital-intensive businesses, they require… continuous capital expenditure. SSNIT doesn’t have the necessary funding to do that. The businesses have been making consistent losses,” Osafo-Marfo said.
