Kwaku Kwarteng, MP for Obuasi Constituency
Member of Parliament for Obuasi West, Kwaku Kwarteng who until today, June 28, 2024, doubled as chairman of the finance committee in Parliament has been reassigned as the lead speaker of the majority caucus on the new Economic Committee of Parliament.
The Majority Leader and MP for Effutu Constituency, Alex Afenyo Markins made this surprising announcement during proceedings in parliament on June 28. He cited Kwarteng’s reassignment as a measure of his competence to rival Bolgatanga’s MP, Isaac Adongo on the economy.
“And so, we are challenging you to come up with your spokesperson on the economy. You have not said so officially, but we are going to make sure we have a spokesperson on the economy to challenge your Adongo. Hon. Kwaku Kwarteng is going to face him directly on the economy,” he said.

The majority leader further explained that the new Economy Committee will be one of the important committees in the house and Kwarteng’s appointment as their (majority) spokesperson is a testament to the importance attached to it.
“I am letting them [Minority] know some of the proactive steps we have taken on this side of the House to throw a serious challenge that it is not just about governance. We have a new Economy Committee and it is going to be the most important Committee in this House,” Afenyo Markin said.
However, differing reports sighted by The Accra Times and corroborated by media outfit, 3news.com, indicate that the Obuasi MP was recently alleged to have impeded the progress of the government’s flagship policy; One District, One Factory, by hindering the approval of tax waivers meant for companies under the program – which has resulted in his reassignment.
According to the new standing orders, there’s a standalone committee known as the Economy Committee carved from the Finance Committee but with very little power compared to the Finance Committee.
