Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang Retained as Mahama’s Running Mate

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has retained Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as its running mate to partner with the party’s flagbearer John Dramani Mahama for the 2024 general elections.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has retained Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as its running mate to partner with the party’s flagbearer John Dramani Mahama for the 2024 general elections.

This makes it the second consecutive time the former Minister of Education would partner with John Mahama for the presidential election after their unsuccessful attempt in the 2020 elections.

Though some party supporters have opposed the selection of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the party officially announced her vice-president candidate status after a closed-door meeting at its headquarters in Accra on March 7.

“The Council of Elders meeting went on well followed by the NEC (National Executive Council) meeting. At the end of the conversation, the flagbearer’s choice was made known to the national executives of the party. He communicated to us that he was very much satisfied with the running mate that he went to battle with in the year 2020. The name of the running mate as you know already, is Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. She will be running for the NDC come December 7, 2024 elections,” the General Secretary, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey said.

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang served as the Minister of Education from 2013 to 2017 during the Mahama administration. She oversaw significant reforms in the education sector, including the construction of E-Blocks.

She was elected as the representative of Ghana to the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Professor  Opoku-Agyemang is a 72-year-old Professor of Literature. She is also the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast and Chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa.

She became the first female vice-presidential candidate from the two major political parties in Ghana when she was chosen as Mahama’s running mate in the 2020 presidential election.

The former campaign manager of John Mahama, Professor Joshua Alabi, has also expressed satisfaction with the party’s choice and believes Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is the best person to handle the position.
