Following the death of his iconic character (Iron Man / Tony Stark) in Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, American actor Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Dr. Doom, in the upcoming Avengers Doomsday film slated for May 1, 2026.
The revelation was made at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival, in California on July 27, 2024, where Robert Downey Jr., unveiled himself dressed in attire and an iron mask reminiscent of the infamous Marvel Comics villain, Victor von Doom (aka Dr. Doom).
The surprise announcement electrified fans at the event, as Downey Jr., who immortalized the comic book hero on the big screen and appeared in 10 Marvel films, had declared in 2019 that he was not returning to the MCU.
The Avengers Doomsday film will be written by Stephen McFeely and directed by Joseph Russo and Anthony Russo ( Avengers Infinity War, Avengers Endgame, Captain America: Civil War).
