Rock City Hotel, the company owned by Minister of Agriculture Bryan Acheampong, has withdrawn its bid to buy 60% shares in four hotels owned by state social security firm, SSNIT.
In a letter to the Director-General of SSNIT, Rock City said it’s withdrawing it bid following “negative” news about the transaction, and what it believes is a lack of stakeholder engagement, as labour groups are opposed to the deal.
“Flowing from all the commentary monitored and the undue negativity that has attended this commentary, we feel you have not done enough to engage all stakeholders, leading to a lack of transparency and understanding of the rationale behind the decision,” it wrote in the letter.

The SSNIT/ Rock City transaction has faced widespread opposition even from labour unions and not just North-Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who first brought the matter to light.
On Friday afternoon, organised labour declared a nationwide strike to oppose the deal. Hours later, the medical association and teacher groups issued statements in solidarity.
The concerns about the deal have largely been on conflict of interest, and corruption, as the company chosen for the bid was owned by a cabinet minister. Many said that was unacceptable.
