Rolex Exits South Africa’s Luxury Market After 76-Year Presence

Swiss luxury watch brand Rolex will be closing its official store in South Africa from next month after 76 years there, reports have said.

Responding to emailed questions from local outlet News24, Rolex Geneva said it’s closing the office because “unfortunately, local markets and conjuncture have changed, and no longer warrant the presence of an official Rolex affiliate.”

The watch company which has been operating in South Africa since 1948, said it would, however, remain “active in the region” through its official retailer network.

“Rolex stockists and other general watch retailers told News24 that while the Rolex office closing its doors – after having a presence in SA for so long – was the end of an era, it was unlikely to have an impact on the premium brand’s products or customers in the local market. The move will not affect aftermarket sales or the local repair operations of the exclusive timepiece brand in South Africa,” News 24 said.
