South Africa: Gcaba Family Denies Allegations of Role in AKA’s Murder

A statement presented to the court by the investigating officer alleged that one of Mr Gcaba's companies sent over 800,000 Rands to the bank account of Mziwethemba Harvey Gwabeni, one of the suspects being tried for the rapper's murder.

The Gcaba family in South Africa has dismissed rumours linking one of their members, Sydney Mfundo Gcaba, to the tragic death of the well-known rapper, AKA and his friend Tibz Motsoane who were shot outside a restaurant in Durban.

During the trial of the suspects last Wednesday, some new information came out suggesting that Sydney Mfundo Gcaba, might be involved in the rapper’s murder.

A statement presented to the court by the investigating officer alleged that one of Mr Gcaba’s companies sent over 800,000 Rands to the bank account of Mziwethemba Harvey Gwabeni, one of the suspects being tried for the rapper’s murder.

The statement also revealed that payment was made a day after AKA’s murder which fuelled the suspicion that Mr Gcaba might have paid the suspects for the murder. The prosecutor argued that there was no evidence that Mr Gwabeni provided services in exchange for the money.

The Gcaba family issued a statement last Sunday claiming that the payment was part of several transactions, between Mr Gcaba and Mr Gwabeni, which were purely for business purposes.

“These numerous transactions over a long period of time can be verified through bank records and were neither unique nor isolated,” the family’s statement said.  “As the Gcaba family, we acknowledge the gravity of the situation at hand and the widespread interest it has garnered. We wish to express our unwavering faith in the South African judiciary and affirm our commitment to cooperating fully with all arms of the state in the pursuit of justice,” the statement said.

The family also added that they were concerned that the authorities have not asked Mr  Gcaba to share his side of the story, even though he is ready to clear his name from the murder allegations.
