South African Actress Connie Chiume Passes Away

The 72-year-old actress died at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg.

Veteran South African actress, Connie Chiume, reportedly passed away on Tuesday, Aug 6, 2024, in Johannesburg.

The family of Connie Chiume announced her death in an Instagram post revealing that the 72-year-old actress died at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg.

“The Chiume Family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume. Connie Chiume, 72, passed on at Garden City Hospital today August 6, 2024. The family will communicate further details and ask for privacy during this difficult period,” the post said.

An outpouring of tributes and condolences flooded social media as the acting community mourned the loss of Connie Chiume, with the South African Government also issuing a statement to honor her memory and contributions to the industry.

Born on June 5, 1952, in Welkom, South Africa, Connie Chiume initially pursued a career in nursing and education before making a career shift to acting in 1977. She first gained recognition for her role in the Greek musical ‘Sola Sola’, but it was her performance in the TV series ‘Inkom Edla Yodwa’ that shot her to stardom in South Africa.

She has starred in multiple hit TV series such as Mohlolohadi, Yizo Yizo, Zone14, Rhythm City, Housekeepers, and Grassroots. She also made a mark internationally with her portrayal of a respected elder in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically in the 2018 blockbuster Black Panther and its 2022 sequel, and Beyoncé’s Black Is King.

Throughout her career, Chiume has received numerous accolades for her performances, including a prestigious award for her work on the drama series Soul City and a notable supporting actress award for her role in Zone 14.
