SSNIT Hotel Sale: Ablakwa Calls for Ghanaian Version of Kenya-Style Protest

He said Akufo-Addo remains resolute in his decision to sell the hotels, despite the "Hands Off Our Hotels" protest on June 18, 2024, which opposed the move.

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is advocating for a mass protest similar to the recent demonstration in Kenya, to oppose the sale of four SSNIT Hotels to Rock City, a company owned by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

Taking to his Facebook page on June 26, 2024, he accused President Akufo-Addo of being the mastermind behind the contentious deal. He said Akufo-Addo remains resolute in his decision to sell the hotels, despite the “Hands Off Our Hotels” protest on June 18, 2024, which opposed the move.

“It’s now confirmed beyond any scintilla of doubt — President Akufo-Addo is the chief architect of all the putrefying State Capture. It’s time to declare our own version of what just happened in Kenya,” Ablakwa said.

On June 24, 2024, a widespread protest by Kenyan youth pressured the government to retract a controversial finance bill. The protest led demonstrators to burn cars and part of the parliament building.

The police response to the protests resulted in the deaths of several demonstrators and injuries to many more, but in an unexpected turn, President William Ruto withdrew the tax plan in a press conference.

Ablakwa further alleged that the SSNIT board chair, Elizabeth Ohene, justified the deal despite the condemnation from Ghanaians and opposition from labour representatives at a meeting held on June 25, 2024, below Akufo-Addo and organized labour.

“Akufo-Addo’s appointed SSNIT board chair, Elizabeth Ohene is also boldly justifying the stinky deal despite overwhelming opposition from Ghanaians and the protest of labour reps on her board,” he said.
