The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to halt the payment of July 2024 salaries for all teaching staff at the Colleges of Education, with the exception of college principals.
This directive is a reaction to the ongoing strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), which commenced last month. CETAG members have been protesting for better working conditions and remuneration packages.

But that action has been described as “illegal” by GTEC.
“At the instance of the Minister of Education and the non-adherents of CETAG members to call off an illegal strike from June 2024, you are by this letter requested to stop the salaries of all teaching staff of the Colleges of Education, CETAG,” a letter dated July 22 addressed to Controller and Accountant General’s Department said.
Meanwhile, the strike has affected all 46 public colleges of education across Ghana, leaving academic work in limbo.
