The Public Relations Officer for Charterhouse, Robert Klah, has disclosed that the Best Group of the Year category was omitted in previous Ghana Music Awards because it is less competitive.
Klah stated in an interview with Graphic Showbiz that the board decided to make the change because they thought the category was no longer competitive.
“Yes, we didn’t add Group of the Year to the nominations list because the Board has realised that it’s no longer as competitive as it used to be, so it was decided to let it rest until they become competitive again,” he said.
According to Robert Klah, artistes in groups may also submit nominations for consideration in other competitive categories based on their performance in the year under review.

“The groups are still eligible to participate in the awards scheme so they can be nominated in any of the song or artistry categories. FRA is a group but they have been nominated in the Best Highlife Artiste of the Year category,” said Klah.
Additionally, he indicated that if there were sufficient competitive groups, there was a chance the excluded category would be reinstated in the future.
“If we have enough competitive groups in the future, the category will be brought back into the scheme,” he said.
The Bethel Revival Choir won the Best Group of the Year award in 2020 and 2021, defeating groups such as La Meme Gang, DopeNation, and R2bees, who won in 2014 and 2015.
The Best Group of the Year category is determined by the board and the public as the group with the most audience appeal and popularity. The group must have two or more members and have released a popular song or single in the year under review.
