Tips to Secure Your Google Account with Just a Few Taps on Your Phone

The requirement for two physical security keys has been lifted, as Google's Advanced Protection Program now only needs a passkey for secure account access

Google has simplified the enrollment process for its Advanced Protection Program, making it easier for individuals at higher risk of targeted online attacks to secure their accounts.

Users can now secure their accounts with a single passkey, leveraging the built-in biometric authentication of their Pixel phone or iPhone, a move away from the previous requirement of two physical security keys.

The program is intended for individuals with high-security needs, such as those working on political campaigns or in journalism, who require extra protection for sensitive information.

Initially, the program required a pair of physical security keys to enroll, and subsequently, one key and a password to access the account.

In 2023, Google updated the feature to introduce passkey login, a passwordless authentication method that allows users to securely access their accounts, apps, and services using their device’s built-in authentication capabilities. However once enrolled, users can switch to passkey login for passwordless authentication.

To enable the Advanced Protection Program, visit Google’s program page, click ‘Get started’, and follow the prompts to complete the setup process.

Google also mandates additional recovery methods, such as a phone number and email address or a secondary passkey, to ensure account access recovery in case of a lockout.
