Two students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and a Junior High School leaver have been remanded into police custody by the Takoradi Circuit Court for alleged sextortion.
19-year-olds, Jerome Enyam and Ebenezer Adam, and Awudu Adams, aged 18, a J.H.S leaver, residing at Fijai, Sekondi-Takoradi, have been accused of violating the Criminal Offenses Act and the Cyber Security Act after they threatened to share a sex video of a former colleague and later demanded a ransom.
Prosecutors detailed how in early 2023, they had succeeded in receiving GH¢1,800 in ransom from the victim – 20-year-old Rhyndolf Owusu Hammond, a former student of the same school.
The prosecutor, Inspector Kaylin Yawson who presented the brief on the case on Wednesday 27, May 2024, said the accused persons also made another attempt at blackmailing the victim later that same year, demanding GH¢ 2,500 in ransom. The court was told that this prompted the victim’s father to report the incident to the Police Intelligence Directorate at Takoradi.
