The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has terminated the appointment of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, and also revoked a two-year extension to his appointment that was due to begin on August 1, 2024.
The decision was announced by the UCC council on Wednesday, 31 July, citing violations of the university’s statutes and the constitution.
“Please note that the purported renewal/extension of your appointment as Vice-Chancellor at the Council’s meeting on 28 July 2023 for a term of two years, effective 1 August 2024, is void and consequently same is revoked as it breaches the University’s Statutes on the renewal of appointment of the Vice-Chancellor,” a letter said, citing issues of his retirement age.
Boampong, a pharmacist and biomedical scientist, was appointed as Vice Chancellor in 2020 for a four-year term, which was originally scheduled to end on 31 July 2024. But last year, the University’s Council at its meeting decided to renew his appointment despite his retirement the following year.

That extension also attracted a lawsuit in May, when an alumnus filed an injunction at the Cape Coast High Court, asking the court to restrain the University from going forward with the re-appointment, as due process was not followed.

It’s not immediately known whether the lawsuit informed the revocation of Boampong’s re-appointment. But the university has meanwhile asked that hands over to the Pro Vice-Chancellor until a new Vice-Chancellor is appointed.
