His Excellency Iain Walker has lauded Ghana for ensuring press freedom under its current democratic dispensation.
The British High Commissioner while admitting that Ghana can do better in issues concerning independence of the media, said he is satisfied with the progress of the country per global indexes on media freedom.
Speaking in a yet to be aired interview on 21 Minutes with KKB, Mr. Walker said, “When you look at independent global indexes on media freedom, Ghana performs well. And of course you can tell me that it can be done even better but it does seem to me that sometimes life should be uncomfortable for those in power.”
According to him, “The role of the media is to shine light on the issues of the day and often to build campaigns and I think that’s an important role of the media for us to see the reports and to draw our own conclusions is of itself a big thing.”

Mr. Walker told Kwabena Kyenkyenhene Boateng, he is of the conviction that the media in Ghana is doing a good job. He said the UK will continue to support agencies like Star Ghana in helping to build on the strengths of the media in the country.
“Are you doing a good job? In many cases yes. I see many challenges in media freedoms in the past and we will be watching closely. One thing we have done is through our funding of Star Ghana in supporting media houses to develop and to invest in journalism,” he disclosed.
