UNIYIA to Host Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change 2024 at the University of Ghana

As the world faces unprecedented environmental challenges, the role of youth in shaping a sustainable future has never been more critical. UNIYIA’s hosting of the Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change 2024 is a testament to the growing momentum of the youth climate movement in Ghana and beyond.

The University of Ghana is set to become a hub of climate action and youth activism as the United Youth Initiative for Africa (UNIYIA) prepares to host the Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change 2024 – LCOY Ghana.

This highly anticipated event, scheduled to take place at the R. S. Amegashie Hall at the University of Ghana Business School on 13th September 2024, will bring together hundreds of youth climate activists and youth-led climate organizations in the country.

The conference is expected to attract a diverse group of participants, including students, environmental advocates, policymakers, and representatives from various sectors.

The event will serve as a platform for young Ghanaians to engage in meaningful discussions, share innovative ideas and develop actionable strategies to combat the pressing issue of climate change.

A highlight of the conference will be the presence of the Danish Ambassador to Ghana, Tom Norring who will be attending as a special guest. The Ambassador’s participation underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing climate change, as well as Denmark’s commitment to supporting climate action initiatives in Ghana.

UNIYIA’s decision to host the LCOY Ghana at the University of Ghana’s RS Amegashie Hall is a strategic move, given the institution’s reputation as a leading center for academic excellence and social change in West Africa.

The hall, known for its state-of-the-art facilities, will provide an ideal venue for the dynamic discussions and interactive sessions planned for the conference.

Convener for LCOY Ghana 2024, Eugenia Yayra Agbley adds “Ghana’s youth are not just leaders of tomorrow; we are the changemakers of today. Our voices, our ideas, and our actions are what will forge a climate-resilient and sustainable future.”

The Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change 2024 will cover a wide range of topics, including sustainable development, renewable energy, environmental justice, and the role of youth in driving climate policy.

Participants will have the opportunity to attend break out workshops, panel discussions, and networking sessions designed to foster collaboration and inspire climate action.

This year’s conference theme, Beyond Breakdown: Youth Resilience in the face of Climate Loss,” reflects the urgent need for youth-driven solutions to the climate crisis.

As young people increasingly take the lead in advocating for environmental sustainability, the LCOY Ghana provides a crucial platform for their voices to be heard and their contributions to be recognized.

The event is expected to culminate in the drafting of a National Youth Climate Statement, which will outline key demands and recommendations to be presented at the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Azerbaijan.

This declaration will serve as a testament to the collective will and determination of Ghana’s youth to tackle climate change head-on.
