The governing council of the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) on Monday, May 6 announced the appointment of its Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor John K.M. Mawutor as the school’s incoming Vice-Chancellor.
In a statement shared on the school’s website stated that his appointment will take effect from January 1 of next year. His appointment places him as the third Vice-Chancellor of the school since its transition from an institute to a university.
According to the statement, the current pro-vice-chancellor brings a wealth of experience spanning two decades of working professionally in the finance sector and in academia – ushering in new effective programs to meet national development needs.
“As Pro Vice-Chancellor, he has promoted the development, diversification, and effective delivery of current and new programs to address emerging national issues, supervised UPSA’s quality assurance initiatives, and streamlined academic processes to enhance efficiency and eliminate redundancies,” the statement said.

According to the statement, before he was appointed pro-vice-chancellor to see to the day-to-day administration of the school, Prof. Mawutor served as vice dean and dean of their graduate school, where he saw an exponential growth of their graduate school programs.
“He has served as Programme Coordinator of various academic programs, Vice-Dean, and in 2016, he was appointed as Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, a position he held until 2022. As Dean, he is credited with the exponential growth of UPSA’s graduate programs both in student population and program offerings,” it said.
Outside of the lecture hall, he has served on committees and national boards, including the Coastal Development Authority, the Abokobi Area Rural Bank and the Ghana Education Trust Fund.
Prof. Mawutor is a professor of Finance and a Chartered Accountant, with a membership in the Institute of Chartered Accountants. He is also an Elder at the Church of Pentecost, LA area, Kokomlemle Assembly. An avid Hearts of Oak fan, Prof. Mawutor is married with children.
His academic achievements include being an Associate Professor of Accounting, actively participating in university statutory committees, and focusing his research on capital flight in Ghana and Sub-Saharan African countries, coupled with advocacy against corruption.
Prof. Mawutor will take over from Prof. Abednego F.O. Amartey, whose tenure ends on December 31, 2024, after overseeing eight (8) years of unprecedented growth at UPSA.
