We’ll Make Sure to Pay Living Allowances to Chieftaincy Institutions – Bawumia

Dr. Bawumia says the payments would bolster chiefs to support government work

Vice President and ruling party presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is promising to pay traditional leaders, particularly paramount chiefs, queen mothers, and divisional chiefs allowances.

At a meeting with chiefs in the Greater Accra Region on Tuesday, Dr. Bawumia said it is a promise that would be included in the party’s 2024 manifesto, adding that the payments would bolster chiefs to aid government work.

“The paramount chiefs currently it is GHC 1000 and even to attend a meeting it may not be enough to pay for petrol. There’s no payment for the queen mothers, there’s no payment for the divisional chiefs. We need to pay living wages to the paramount chiefs, to the queen mothers, and divisional chiefs. If we do that then the chieftaincy institution would be empowered to take decisions that help the government,” he said.

He has also said his government – evident by the establishment of a chieftaincy ministry ever since the Nana Akufo-Addo administration came into power eight years ago – wants a partnership with the chiefs. “I want us to be close,” he said.
