X Permits Adult Content Under New Policy

The policy also states that pornographic content that promotes nonconsensual objectification or sexualization of minors would be prohibited.

The social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has updated its policies to allow users to share pornographic content, also known as “Adult Content.”

The policy, which was announced by the company on June 3, 2024, will allow users to distribute and view consensually produced pornographic content while adhering to new guidelines.

“Users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed. Sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression,” the policy stated.

The policy was created to provide adults with opportunities to create adult content that aligned with their own sexual beliefs.

“We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality,” the policy read.

The policy also states that pornographic content that promotes nonconsensual objectification or sexualization of minors would be prohibited.

“Users will also not be allowed to share content promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviours”, the policy stated

The new policy will also prevent users from setting up profiles with pictures depicting nudity.  However, users under the age of 18 who do not provide a birth date for their X profiles will be unable to view posts labelled as adult content.

Excerpts from the policy advised users who post adult content on the X platform to change their media settings to automatically add a warning note to their videos, alerting viewers who may not want to watch such content. Users who do not mark their posts will have their account suspended by X. Adult content created using artificial intelligence (AI) will be permitted to be shared on the platform.

Following the company’s rebranding to X, after Elon Musk acquired the application in 2022, the popular social platform was known to allow the sharing of pornographic materials without restrictions. According to a 2022 report, the company estimates that approximately 13% of its content includes adult content.
