Ambulance Case: NDC Plays Alleged 16-Minute Phone Conversation Between AG Dame and Third Accused

According to the NDC, the conversation between the AG and Mr. Jakpa was held on the morning of April 9, 2024, hours before the accused person appeared in court to testify

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has played a 16-minute phone conversation that it says proves Attorney-General Godfred Dame’s attempt to coerce the third accused person in the ongoing ambulance case to give false testimonies that would implicate Minority leader, Ato Forson who is a party to the trial.

According to the NDC, the conversation between the AG and the third accused Richard Jakpa was held on the morning of April 9, 2024, hours before the accused person appeared in court to testify.

“The audio recording provides incontrovertible evidence of professional misconduct on the part of Godfred Dame as a lawyer and prosecutor,” Aseidu Nketia, the NDC party chairman said.

The allegations come as the Attorney-General was accused last week in court by Mr. Jakpa of using underhand tactics to have him implicate the Minority Leader. However, Dame denied wrongdoing, saying he also had evidence of being approached by the third accused for a plea deal.

In the audio that was played at the NDC conference today, May 28, the voices being heard appeared to be that of AG Dame and Jakpa discussing when the ambulances arrived in Ghana, letters of credit that authorised the contract, negligence in pre-inspection defects, and a deal about how the accused had to answer questions in the case. There were also mentions of the Minority Leader, Dr. Forson’s name.

“If I agree about how you want me to go about my answering of questions, frankly speaking, I’ll be dishonest because I’ll be assisting someone I know is completely innocent about this, for example, Ato Fortson to be jailed because I knew something was wrong, was not the way and decide to answer the questions in a way that will make your case better for you to jail him. I’ll be battling with my conscience anytime you bring up this issue when we were at Yonny Kulendi’s place,” the other person on the call said.

Businessman Richard Jakpa and Minority Leader Ato Forson (who was then a deputy finance minister) are being prosecuted for causing a €2.37 million financial loss to the state over the importation of 200 defective ambulances in 2012.

During the course of this trial, both Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa have denied wrongdoing. The Attorney-General however maintains that Ato Forson and the other defendant have a case to answer for their role in importing ‘fake ambulances’ into the country.
